New Sheriff In Town: Finding Home

The sounds of her son’s laughter shook Myrtle back to the present. She shut off her home office’s SatNav and locked away the micro files. When Myrtle opened her office door, Django ran into her arms. His unexpected enthusiasm rocked her back on her heels.

“Ma, Dad bought you a present but he told me to say I picked it out and he just paid for it but that’s not true.” Django’s voice had a singsong happiness. Myrtle embraced her boy’s head in a bear hug and tossed her ex a quizzical look over her son’s head. If Androids could blush, Hatchett would be scarlet, Hatchett just looked stricken. In the living room Myrtle unwrapped the box and lifted the lid. A small globe rose from the box and expanded into a a globe of Enceladus.

Kneeling by the low coffee table, Myrtle exclaimed with joy.

“See I would have given you a retro trucker’s hat that read “Keep On Truckin’ but he sold me on this thing. It’s pretty cool,” Django said.

“It’s, it’s our home,” Myrtle said softly. “Thank you this is so…”

Encircled by a diamond ring of ice, the hologram globe glowed brilliant white. Myrtle could see the Lightbearer Mines under celadon domes on the north and south poles of this moon. Under these domes she could see the mine openings and the ground vibrating from seismic shocks. Enceladus’ frozen ocean lashed with craters and ice stripes. Near the globe’s equator sat the blue domes of the Alpha colonies. Myrtle and Django marveled at farms and houses and tiny people under the artificial skies.

In her mind she was back on Mars patrolling with Hatchett, her first and best partner. She was in a memory looking up at the night sky when they turned and shared their first kiss. Django magnified the globe pointing out his school and his friends’ houses.

“Well let me head out.” Hatchett rose and Myrtle’s hand shot out to his. His gray hand laid in her brown hand, the weight of their years together and all they had survived laying in hands. Confused, Hatchett slowly sat back on the sofa. Hatchett squeezed her hand and rested his other hand on her shoulder.

“Stay.”
