The Cedar Tree

I went to the river to find my peace

It was raging it was loud

My ancestors song I found

In the rapids and the flow

When I looked beside me

The cedar spoke to my soul

Come child-

Tilt your head toward my boughs

I closed my eyes

With a slow deep breath

The water dripped from branches to my face

The tears of my heritage

Medicine they say

Cleansing and healing

Brushing me off

A kiss from the other side

Hope born from the cold water

mixed with the warmth of my tears

running down my cheeks

There I found my strength

I am not afraid
