Darkness... Cold... Wet... Rain... Emptyness... Lonelyness... The Voice of god echoes the warning: "Three Minutes Remaining".
With the flip of a switch, the entire world around Shai had turned to black. Every streetlight, cellphone, vehicle headlight, and building window had instantly shut off. And as Shai froze in her steps and adjusted to the situation, the warning came.
Shai's adrynaline kicked in as her eyes started to adjust to the darkness. Without much thought she figured she had to get out of the city, or at least as far away from the downtown area as she could. The rain began to downpour as she sprinted down the city block, heading south.
To Shai's surprise, the city streets seemed completely empty. no one was outside. the cars on the street were abandoned. No one else was running away. the entire world had dissapeared on her.
"Hello!" Shai thought to yell as she ran. Her voice fell shrilly flat in the rain.
Nothing answered her for two city blocks. There was aboslutely no sign of life. The feeling was downright dreadful, and Shai's heart beat faster with fear.
"2 Minutes Remaining!" came that voice in the sky. It thundered down at her as if a million speakers were hidden in the clouds above.
"HELLO!?" Shai yelled back at the sky, frustrated. "HELP ME!"
There was no response.
Shai began to run down the street again, trying to pick up speed. She frantically imagined scinarios in which the city was set to detonate. Perhaps some sort of nuclear device within the center of town. She certainly could beleive that the overlords would be capable of such a thing.
A light showen in the darkness. A single Green light, lit in darkness. Shai sprinted to the light, and wrenched on the door to one of the buildings it was coming from. The door swung open easily and Shai scrambled inside.
It was an apartment stairway, with a single swinging Green bulb, swaying back and forth. From inside, It was dead quiet, a stark contrast to the rain outside. One set of stairs ran down to a basement, where another green light could be seen. Shai decided to follow. She walked down the steps and into a clean tiled hallway. it reminded her of a hospital, but there were no patients. It was however very long. Green florescents on the ceiling went on forever, with doors on either side.
"What the hell is this!?" Shai said to herself aloud as she crept forward towards a door.
Right as she peered through the window of glass in the door, the voice came back. "1 Minute Remaining!" It made Shai Jump and stumble onto the floor.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT!?" Shai cried out in desperation. "WHAT DO I DO!? WHERE IS EVERYBODY!?"
Shai burst through the doorway, into a large morge. there were empty gurneys, autopsy tables, and storages in the walls. At the far end of the large room, there was a single green light turned on at one of the storage spaces on the wall.
Shai approached the door and pulled a lever to open it and slide out a table. She did this quickly. on the table was a strange sight. It was a mutalated body. it looked completely torn up to flesh and bone, it was slumped on its side, head turned away from her.
"30 Seconds Remaining!" The Voice warned, this time with a stern tone.
The green lights turned all yellow on cue.
Shai's heart was beating out of her chest now. Her hands were shaking, tears streaming down her face, wimpering. She started to mutter "please" under her breath, hoping anything would stop that timer.
She reached for the dead body and flipped it over. To her horror, where a man's face should be was instead a bright round spotlight. it shone yellow directly into Shai's face, like one giant illuminated eye.
The body came to life.
It reached out suddenly and grabbed Shai, pinning her arms to her sides with incredible strength. Shai shrieked and tried to squirm away, but the reanimated body held her in place. The head turned and leaned in close, blinding her in its yellow light.
Shai yelled and squirmed but could not escape. A gargly voice came from the body.
"We control you!"
"We control you!"
"We control you!"
The voice from the sky boomed. "Zero Seconds Remaining. STOP!"
Shai was blinded in red. Red everywhere. . . Red everything. . .
When she blinked, it had all dissapeared.
Nothing was holding her, No bodies on tables. She was outside suddenly again, it was raining. She turned her head away from the red light and noticed herself back on the street, people passing by her to use the crosswalk.
Shai hugged her arms around her waist, and huddled her head towards the ground. Walking away, never feeling more alone.
