The Ancient Mirror
The ruined buildings surround me like jagged pieces of broken glass sticking out of the ground. Everything is gray and has lost the color it once had. The ancient civilization was formed so long ago that not even time itself could compare.
As I walk down the abandoned streets, I look in every nook and cranny for any sort of artifact I can find. Our family's museum couldn't survive if we didn't have anything to put in it, anyway. When I stroll onto a small cobblestone street, I find what looks like an old jewelry shop. I peek inside, curiously taking everything in. Most of what must've been left here is somewhat gone; only a few old rings and necklaces remain. I pick them up, and I'm about to leave when I find a huge mirror hidden by the exit. It is completely worn down, but it has beautiful golden details engraved into the sides. I smile, and I reach to pick it up. It's heavy, but I manage to carry it out of the store. As I walk back with the huge object in my hands and the jewelry in my pockets, I hear an echoing voice come out of nowhere.
I drop the mirror in a panic, but it lands on its back and doesn't break. My eyes dart around, looking for any sort of threat. The ruined city goes quiet again, and I let out a deep breath. I reach to pick up the mirror, but I let out a startled gasp when I see a face within the mirror that is not my own. The reflection shimmers and smiles, looking as if they enjoy my surprise. My curiosity gets the best of me, and I try touching the mirror on the stone ground.
"Who are you?" I ask, not even sure if I'll get a response.
However, the same echoing voice from earlier calls out from inside of the ancient mirror. "Questions like that aren't fun. Why don't you figure out for yourself?"
