Dudley Who, Right?
“Welcome to a new episode of, To Tell the Truth. Today, we have a person of daring and intrigue. And because the guest is well-known by sight, we will have our guest and imposters remain unseen and will use voice altering technology.
“Our mystery guest hails from North of the border. He is a well-known member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or RCMP. He has as his main mission to keep Nell Fenwick safe at all times, which he does with skill and aplomb.
“Even though our guests are secured away from our single panelist, we will still have them introduce themselves.
“Mystery Guest Number 1, what is your name, please?”
“My name is Dudley Do-Right.”
“Mystery Guest Number 2, what is your name, please?”
“My name is Dudley Do-Right.”
“Mystery Guest Number 3, what is your name, please?”
“My name is Dudley Do-Right.”
“The rules are simple since there is only one panelist. When you are certain you know who the real Dudley Do-Right is, you can merely tell us which numbered guest it is. You may begin asking questions now.”
“Thank you. Okay. Number 1, who is your arch enemy?”
“I would probably consider Snidely Whiplash to be my greatest foe, but he is more of a nemesis than an enemy. We cross swords, metaphorically speaking, weekly. Or at least we did long ago. Snidely has always been so clever, but I have luckily been able to best him at every turn.”
“Number 2…”
“May I also add…”
“Yes, Number 1.”
“May I also add that Snidely Whiplash is a dashing rogue, with wits and looks and brawn to boot. I often wonder how I do so well against him.”
“Probably because of my horse.”
“How’s that Number 2?”
“Well, Number 1, I just know that I would be lost without that dear horse of mine.”
“Wait a minute.”
Number 1 and Number 2 say together, “What is it, Number 3?”
“I just want to say that my dear horse has no thumbs.”
“And?”
“And so, he cannot untie dear sweet Nell when that dastardly Snidely Whiplash ties her to the train tracks or to the bridge about to explode or to whatever contraption he ties her to.”
“Right. So Number 3, is untying Nell your greatest contribution to the daring rescues?” Asks the panelist.
“Well, I wouldn’t say that. There is bravery to riding my great steed to battle my foe and rescue my damsel. And cunning. And…”
“Dumb luck.”
“Now see here Number 1. I have had quite enough from you.”
The panelist agrees. “As have I. So let me ask my last few questions before guessing which of you is the real Dudley Do-Right. Number 2, what do you think of that horse of yours?”
“Oh that horse is so cunning and daring. I daresay that I would be lost without him.”
“Is your horse so fast and clever then?”
“Ever so much so.”
“I think, Mr. Host, that I am ready to guess who is the real Dudley Do-Right.”
“Wait a minute, you did not even ask me, Number, uh which number am I again?”
Even the audience joins in telling him, “Number 3.”
The panelist does not wait for Number 3 to say more. “Yes, that’s right, I only asked you one question. But I still know that the real Dudley Do-Right is Number... Number 2.”
“No. No. No. It’s me. Number 3.”
The three guests come out. Snidely Whiplash leads the way with a hand held high. He twirls his mustache in his fingers with his other hand. Nell Fenwick follows with her hands behind her back. Dudley Do-Right comes out shaking his head. He cannot believe it.
Nell goes to the panelist who comes out from behind his microphone. Nell holds out a carrot to Dudley’s horse. She rubs her face in his mane. He takes a bite of carrot and tosses his head high in recognition. He laughs.
“Well folks, that’s all the time we have for today. And although our panelist did not guess the correct Dudley Do-Right, he was clearly the winner in Nell’s book, as he was in hers.”
