I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

Caged bird in the dawn,

Sings of fields beyond its reach—

I know why it sings.

Feathers clipped, wings still,

Yet its heart holds soaring hills—

I know why it sings.

Bars of shadow cast,

On the wall, freedom's contrast—

I know why it sings.

Morning's first light beams,

In its song, the day redeems—

I know why it sings.

Echoes fill the air,

A melody of despair?

No, I know its wings.

So, I hum along.

I know why it sings it’s song.

Soon, I’ll spread my wings.
