POEM STARTER

Take the first line from a book and use it to begin a poem.

Try to choose a book at random and challenge yourself to write the poem around it, instead of planning to choose a book based on your poem idea.

Bad Omens

First (proper) line from Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett

It was a nice day.

But Ben still had to go.

He’d been nice.

He’d brought some ice

Cream but

Ben was dangerous.

He played the part well,

That of the caring husband,

of the loving son,

the gracious brother.

But oh my,

and it’s such a bother,

Ben was dangerous.

He had to go.

He was dangerous

in the way sleeping

with a domesticated lion is.

He was dangerous

in the way driving

at 80 miles per hour

through the city is.

Sure, you can do it.

Sure, it might go well a thousand times.

But the chance,

the chance for disaster is high.

You’re basically courting death.

So, Ben just had to go.
