POEM STARTER

Imagine you are a young child attempting rhyming poetry for the first time.

Consider the language you use to reflect the child’s age. Also try to think about what would be an important topic for them to write about.

Big squishy jellybean

Let’s start this off the way it’s meant to be,

I’ve been alive for a long time it seems,

I wasn’t born yesterday I mean I’m already turning two times three,

Life is really cool it’s kinda like a great big colorful jellybean,

Like a big squishy thingy and sometimes you see dots in the sky my mom called stars,

They are pretty and I’d like to touch them but I think they may be like really far,

I can still see them sometimes it don’t matter where I are,

It makes my lips curl upwards and warms this thing my mom called my heart,

Then there’s this thing called the sun I see WOW,

I’d like to take a bite of it but I think it’d be sour,

It reminds me of a lemon but with much more power,

I like when it moves across the sky sea hour by hour,

When I think of this jellybean full of wonder,

I wish it really was one but I’m told it’s not and that’s uh what’s that word again? Oh yeah it’s a bummer,

Some days it’s cold and white I think that’s winter,

I like playing in the blanketed white outside enormous cover but,

My toes get cold so I like it when it also warmer,

I also like it cause the word bummer sounds a little like summer,

It’s kinda funny and it often makes me giggle,

I put my feet in the grass and water and let my toes just wiggle,

It feels good and I love how it tickles,

And the grass is green and that’s the same color of pickles,

I bet you didn’t know that now did you?

I think I’m getting hungry, I might sneak inside like a ninja and get me a cookie,

They’re really good especially when they are warm and mushy,

I really like them they are like hugs for my tummy,

They are oh so good like really really yummy,

Oh I also have a big fat cat Mr. Whiskers,

He sits beside me and shakes in his own quiet whispers,

He follows me everywhere I go even to the pooper,

His tail tickles my face when it swooshes and flickers,

He walks around like the king of the house but,

He runs and hides if he sees a mouse,

He’s a big scaredy cat and he can’t be found,

Sometimes I wish he was a dog so we could go outside and be puddle pals,

He also likes looking outside watching the birds flap,

Then he closes his eyes to take a long cat nap,

When I wake him up and tickle his feet he gives me a fast slap,

I know he’s just playing so I’m ok with all that,

I like naps too cause when I wake up everything is different,

Like the noises all change I know because I can hear it,

The way I feel changes too I know because I feel it,

Adults don’t nap they drink this stuff that smells like old nasty candy bars,

Then Zoom Zoom they go fast as racing cars,

Room to room they Zoom I never know where they are,

They go quick from here to there like super fast and oh so far,

Maybe if they ate a cookie and took a little nappy,

They would be like me and Mr. Whiskers they too could be happy,

Maybe they should eat a hundred cookies,

Then their bellies would be full like a piñata at a B-day party,

Then their tummies would stop growling,

Oh then there’s a park with a big slide that goes way up tall,

You climb up to the top so you can sit and fall,

When you get to the bottom it’s times to explore,

Like you’re a pirate searching for a treasure,

It’s oh so fun and fills me with pleasure,

Don’t even get me started with them wonderful colorful crayons,

Each one you pick up is a magical wand,

You can use them on paper, your walls, television and even the ground,

Dino’s come alive and roam all around,

At times they are mean and make a rrwwaarrring sound,

When they are nice sometimes I see them at tea parties with princesses that’s where they can be found,

In books sometimes I color outside the lines,

My mommy gets red in the face but I think it’s ok it’s fine,

It’s my picture and I can color it however I like,

I’m a little rebel I don’t do her way I like mine,

Grown ups are quick to anger and get so serious,

Life is like that jellybean full and misteeryus,

They need to bend their rules and get a little messy,

So then they can see how fun it is being a willy silly nilly,

My mom think life is hard but I think it’s wonderful,

Like a giant painting filled with every color,

Some people think something’s don’t always go together,

We can go together all mismatched like my socks it’s it don’t matter,

Sometimes we fall down and get a boo-boo,

That’s only the universe hugging you,

So you can get back up and play like you always to,

Like falling off a bike just to get back on so you can ride it to the moon,

Don’t worry mom I won’t be gone long in fact i’ll be back pretty soon,

When I grow up I’ll be a master cookie maker,

I’ll be the best and they’ll call me the cookie dough caretaker,

They’ll be so good every bite will make your toes curl,

Made with love they’ll taste like puffy clouds that like to giggle,

Everyone will keep coming cause they’ll be the best cookies ever,

When people like them and say thank you I’ll tell them your welcome but please remember,

The special ingredient is from the dreams I had when I wrote this they just kept getting bigger,

You can’t find the special ingredient for it’s hidden like the pirates treasure,

Like the one I never found but it still makes me giggle,

Like this big squishy jellybean that is still here when I get up everyday,

I know it’s out there somewhere it’s full of happiness and toys,

Let’s sprinkle the cookies with imagination and joy,

But it’s almost time to put an to end my story,

So don’t stress anymore just wake up everyday and enjoy,

Every moment is a minute of bliss,

It’s so magical how can everyone look all around but still miss,

That everything is a miracle like a giant jellybean kiss!

We should live everyday and accept all that and especially this,

For everything that’s born will and some time end,

So our soul, spirit and heart we should send,

To everyone everywhere just release your fears and start to mend,

For on this Big Squishy Jellybean, it is what it is!

So go outside and enjoy the day,

You should tell everything I love you, that’s what I always say,

So I love you all I hope you all have a day as wonderful as you all are, YAY!!!!

You are all special, important, and a miracle in the making,

This moment now is yours and mine so stop with the time we’re wasting,

And enjoy this moment on this giant jellybean for every second it’s ours for the taking!!

Just like them cookies for you in my future I’ll be making!

So take care and play without all the wrong you keep thinking,

And go to sleep tonight and remember that stars that are twinkling,

Is a twilight winking and wishing you all a wonderful night of unthinkable dreaming!
