POEM STARTER
Loss
Write a poem, in any style, that focuses on the theme of loss.
70’s Trend
They got ride of the carpet in the bathroom
Tore it from the floor as the contractor laughed at those neon red hearts
Told me it was an old people thing
How it used to be trendy in the 70’s
You two bought that house in the 70’s
Saved every penny so your two boys could live in that house
Furnished the building yourselves
You told me when I was a kid
How you made this house for family and friends
How you installed the bar in the basement for parties
I never was old enough to use it
But me and my sister would pretend we were at
those parties you loved to host
I remember how the basement was always cold
And your tv never saw color
Staying in black and white to remind you of the 70’s
You were always up late when I wanted midnight snacks
Sharing your ice cream with me
I’m sorry
I wish we didn’t sell that house
But you were gone and no one could take it
The new landlords took out everything that was you
From the bar to the carpet in the bathrooms
No more 70’s
We just dumped it all
I don’t know if it was for practicality or loss
I just wished you didn’t leave
Wish I still got those birthday cards
With your messy handwriting you had after the stroke
You used to hate your handwriting but I didn’t mind
Just meant you cared
I wish I could tell you how I am doing
What my life is like
How I grew into myself like you always said I would
How I still love writing
I learned how to laugh again
Telling stories to my friends
I’m sorry we left you alone so long
I was always a terrible granddaughter
You were an amazing Gigi
Maybe one day I can see you again
Go back to the house with carpet in the bathrooms and a bar for house parties
Living in that 70’s trend
Maybe this time I learn how to be kind in time
Maybe I can hug you right
Hear your voice
Remember to hold your hand walking down the basement
I’m sorry I didn’t understand it was the last time
In that 70’s trend
