STORY STARTER

Write a story about a world in which you have to be granted permission to feel an emotion. What happens when your main character disobeys this rule?

Anger

“I want to feel…” Hap Jules waved his hands in the air, in a sort of ‘it is what it is’ gesture.

“Anger,” He finished.

“Why would you want that? Asked Zerafina Dimes, nonchalantly.

Confusion and shock - much like hatred - were emotions reserved only for the select few, requiring permissions at the highest level.

Hap leaned back against one of the blue and yellow seats that typified Gaston Monorail carriages.

“I’m just fed up,”

Zerafina stared hard at Hap, thinking; finally, a question.

“How did you get it?

“Rag knows a guy,”

“You’re playing a dangerous game Hap”

Hap sat forward, leaning his elbows on his knees.

“Don’t you ever want to feel differently

Zerafina?

“I am….content,” Hap shook his head.

“I don’t believe you,”

“You can believe what you want. Just keep

me out of it,”

A voice came over the rail intercom then.

“Next stop: Rubicon Station”

“What happened to the rebel who used to

say “we should feel what we want, when

we want”

“She grew up Hap. The real world has a

way of doing that,”

Zerafina got to her feet, and started for the Mono’s south eastern door. Behind her, Hap Jules reached inside his coat pocket, and stood up. Stepping forward quickly, he plunged an injector into Zerafina’s neck.

“I’m sorry Zerafina, but I don’t believe that’

An expression of pain crossed Zerafina’s face, as she turned to face Hap. As the train came to a screeching halt, she was almost thrown forward. At the last she gripped onto one of the mono’s handrails.

With the exit doors hissing open, and clutching her neck, Zerafina took one last look at her attacker before stepping onto the platform.

Seated once more, the mono picking up speed, a thought occurred to Hap Jules, and he smiled. _She definitely looked angry_.
