âIf we pull this off, weâre set for life, Misty! How can you be unsure?â
I sigh. âTristan, if you werenât already aware, Iâve never really stolen anything with this much value before! So, yes, I am very much unsure about this!â
Tristan rolls his leafy green eyes. âYouâre such a softie! You wouldnât even let me kill that rat that was living in our garage, instead you set it free!â
âYes, in fact, I did,â I reply matter of factly. âJust because the rat was living in our garage doesnât mean it deserves to die! It was just trying to make a home for itâs family.â
Tristan runs his hands through his messy hair. âThis isnât about the stupid rat, alright? This is about us finally escaping poverty, finally becoming the wealthy couple we once dreamed about becoming. Do you want to let go of that dream? Or have you already?â
âTristan,â I say sympathetically, placing my hand on his. âOf course I want to be what we dreamed of when we were young. But⌠everything has changed. Weâre married now, weâre adults, not clueless teenagers. We canât steal something that belongs to someone else. Itâs against the law⌠imagine the consequences if someone caught us.â
âDonât you think itâs worth the risk, Mis?â Tristan pulls his hand away, suddenly giving me an icy glare.
I slump, looking down. After a few moments, I finally whisper, âI donât know anymore. This chest⌠whatâs inside is more valuable than life itself. Itâs heavily guarded and will probably cost us our lives⌠why are you willing to do this? There will be plenty more opportunities to become that lovely family that we dreamed about.â
A momentâs pause before both me and my husband catch my slip. I draw in a sharp breath and exhale slowly.
âWaitâŚâ Tristan says quizzically, âyou said âfamily.â Not coupleâŚâ
I smile wistfully and nod. âThatâs right,â I say, âIâm pregnant.â
