Arguments

“If we pull this off, we’re set for life, Misty! How can you be unsure?”

I sigh. “Tristan, if you weren’t already aware, I’ve never really stolen anything with this much value before! So, yes, I am very much unsure about this!”

Tristan rolls his leafy green eyes. “You’re such a softie! You wouldn’t even let me kill that rat that was living in our garage, instead you set it free!”

“Yes, in fact, I did,” I reply matter of factly. “Just because the rat was living in our garage doesn’t mean it deserves to die! It was just trying to make a home for it’s family.”

Tristan runs his hands through his messy hair. “This isn’t about the stupid rat, alright? This is about us finally escaping poverty, finally becoming the wealthy couple we once dreamed about becoming. Do you want to let go of that dream? Or have you already?”

“Tristan,” I say sympathetically, placing my hand on his. “Of course I want to be what we dreamed of when we were young. But… everything has changed. We’re married now, we’re adults, not clueless teenagers. We can’t steal something that belongs to someone else. It’s against the law… imagine the consequences if someone caught us.”

“Don’t you think it’s worth the risk, Mis?” Tristan pulls his hand away, suddenly giving me an icy glare.

I slump, looking down. After a few moments, I finally whisper, “I don’t know anymore. This chest… what’s inside is more valuable than life itself. It’s heavily guarded and will probably cost us our lives… why are you willing to do this? There will be plenty more opportunities to become that lovely family that we dreamed about.”

A moment’s pause before both me and my husband catch my slip. I draw in a sharp breath and exhale slowly.

“Wait…” Tristan says quizzically, “you said ‘family.’ Not couple…”

I smile wistfully and nod. “That’s right,” I say, “I’m pregnant.”
