STORY STARTER

Write a scene where a character confesses their (unreturned) love for another.

Please…

We walked side by side like we did every day at dusk. Hands brushing against each other.

Today was the day I wanted to confess.

Ever since I met her, my heart has fluttered at every smile and laugh of hers. I love her—not in the way that I only admired her looks but in the way that I wanted to wake up next to her every morning, dance in the kitchen, and go stargazing.

We sat down on the bench we'd been sitting on for years. As she watched the sunset, I glanced over at her. She was beautiful—like an angel shaped by God himself.

I take a deep breath as I gather my thoughts. My heart racing in my chest. “Hey, Kel.”

She looked over at me, “Yeah?”

“I need to tell you something.”

Her eyes widened as if she could read my mind. “Alex…”

“I love you… and not just in a friendly way, I love you more than a friend. Ever since we met-”

“D-don’t…” her voice cracking as tears dripped down her face.

I look at her, confused. “Kelly… I”

She shakes her head. “Don’t say any more… please…”

I felt as if my heart shattered, “why?”

“You’re the most amazing person I have ever met…but I can’t recuperate your love…i-im sorry.”

Every word felt like another arrow shot at my back. “But-”

She gets up, “You deserve someone that has feelings. Someone who isn't broken.”

What was she talking about? Why? She isn't broken. “Kelly, don't say that. Please. You are the sun in my eyes and you are the only person who has ever made me this way. But why are you saying that? You aren't broken… at least I don't think you are ”

“You wouldn't understand.”

“Please tell me.” I try to take her hand but she pulls away.

“There are things you don't know about me… but I’ll tell you this… I stopped believing in love long ago. My heart is broken and there's no way to fix it.”

I glance down at my shoes as tears blur my vision. “Please let me prove to you that you deserve love. Please.”
