High Above the City

High above the city,

I saw a girl walking to class with a smile,

A boy who looked like he hadn’t slept in a while,

A dog that was hostile,

High above the city,

I heard a man arguing with his wife,

It seemed as though they were going through a divorce,

I heard another laughing, talking about how much he loved life,

At first, I thought it was cruel,

How is it that while someone is passing through the depths of the sea,

Another is swimming, free of all care?

That when someone is walking through the desert,

Another is drinking water like it’s not a present,

Life is a fraud,

I thought,

It must be flawed,

I did not know that the world was perfect like this,

That amidst the sea you can see a glimpse of someone swimming and hold on,

Hold on to the belief that something better awaits you,

How foolish I was,

Thinking I knew better than the Creator,

Thinking I could mold a better world,

I did not know that inside a desert you can see a person holding water and know that it exists,

That you are not searching for something that is fictional,

But rather something that is real and tangible,

How foolish I was,

Sitting high above the city,

Not realizing that the world, in itself, was perfect.
