Endless Dreams

The grass was green and wet with dew from the morning mists. I breathed in deeply, enjoying the sound of the birds early songs. But something was missing. I looked around, slowly becoming more and more anxious. To the natural eye, everything was normal. Everyone was doing things exactly as they should. A little boy ran around his mother laughing merrily as a cart of goods led by an angry looking merchant stormed down the road. Horses whinnied and dogs bayed at strangers passing by. The trees creaked as a soft breeze blew over their leafy brown branches. Everything seemed to be perfect and for a moment I wondered if I could just stay here. If everything could be just the way it was then my worries would disappear. But they kept worming their way back in until I simply had to acknowledge them. I closed the beautiful wooden door softly behind me and stepped down into the street. Roses lined the walkway and wildflowers grew out of every crack in the road. A wonderous smell floated in down the street from a nearby bakery. The woman I saw earlier from my open window was still nearby. Going from stall to stall buying all sorts of fruits and vegetables. I walked up to her feeling like somehow I knew her but I just couldn't remember her name. She was in the middle of paying for a small bag of apples when I said “Hello, it sure is a beautiful day out!” But the woman paid no attention to me and kept right on with her shopping. I thought she hadn’t heard me or was just being plain rude so I reached out my had to tap her shoulder but my hand went right through. “AH!” I shouted jumping back. Suddenly the world around me seemed to melt away. The roses, the people, everything I just saw was gone. I stood alone in a white world of nothing. No sound, no breath, no one. Like a never ending box of white. I tried to move, to run, but I had no legs, I could see, but I didn’t have eyes. Finally, I understood. “He’s in my mind.” frantically I thought of all the possibilities of escape but my mind was mush. I couldn’t seem to get a coherent idea in my mind. But I knew what I felt. Anger. A deep-seated anger that I knew would not leave until his presence was wiped off the face of the earth. The moment I had dreaded was here. All that I did to prepare myself was still not enough. I was in the very hand of my worst enemy. Then I dropped into another world. The ground was dead. There were no plants for miles. I desperately looked around for anything that could help me. But instead all I saw was ash and smoke. It blotted out the sun and clawed at any light. Burning heat hit me from all sides and the smell of brimstone filled the air. Hands stretched out of the ground. Dead and disgusting. Their black eyes peered into my soul and counted me worthless. Their empty bones rattled as their ancient malice was reawakened. A gripping fear clenched its cold fist around my heart. Again I tried to run and again I could not. They're gnarled hands dug in and my screams filled the air with the sound of utter agony. After what felt like centuries of excruciating pain it seemed I passed out in my dream. Which didn't make a lot of sense but I gladly welcomed it. I sunk in to the soft cloud of darkness and thought ceased to exist.
