POEM STARTER
Write a descriptive poem which portrays a busy city.
You could use metaphors, imagery, and appeal to the senses, to really capture the feel of a city.
The Dancers in the City
By the city square
To the stage
a man
invites others towards him
To dance by the food trucks
In tune with his step
The song starts to play
Another man, long sleeves, button shirt
Sweaty. Overweight but keeps up the dance
Young, a job in the city, but never a flirt
Father drops him off, mornings in a trance
Government job but shirt scuffed with dirt
Always late, always rules hes trying to skirt
Step, step, he pulls up his pants
A woman, not tall, brings her daughter
Friday in the city, she wants to reach her
She follows the steps, trying not to falter
Doesn’t move often, an awkward saunter
When they ask, she sends her kid a fiver
She doesn’t stop to think about their father
Step, spin, she thinks, start the washer
He’s thirty or so, from the states
Data science, one of the tall towers
Across the world, with no mates
Joined the dance, put down his flowers
Feet in rhythm, mind on the dates
He wanted a ‘his’, to be an ‘ours’
Left foot, right, then he waits
An older man, watches, near the back,
Then joins step in step with the rest
Knows the city, in and out, every track
He dances, feet misses many steps
Backpack on him, never left his back
City taken too much, no second to lack
Step, and stop. He leaves arms at chest
By the city sqaure
Off the stage
A dancer
Thanks the crowd
The food trucks stay open
The city keeps dancing
All the different songs keep playing
