POEM STARTER
Inspired by Jewelie Rain
Write a poem that transitions through two or more of the seven stages of grief: denial, bargaining, anger, depression, loss of self, reflection, and acceptance.
Single-Girl Era
Always the bridesmaid never the bride
Take a look inside
Maybe you’ll see why
I’m sure there are no cracks
No places where I lack
No truths that I deny
If I smile a little wider
Or if my weight is a little lighter
Surely, if I try
How dare they not even see me!
I wear no cloak of invisibility
Those jerks deserve to die!
Or maybe I must,
I lack all but lust
I trip, I sink, I cry
I remember not my very own name
My identity burning, I threw it in the flame
Who the hell am I?
Could I be more than a partner?
Perhaps if I journey farther
My body heaves a sigh
Always the bridesmaid never the bride
For those walking down the aisle, no smile will I hide
I smile, leap, and finally fly
