STORY STARTER
In a classic body swap scenario, you wake up as a famous philosopher, about to give a grand speech on the meaning of life to thousands of people.
What will you tell them?
Wish
When I wished to be someone important, I did not picture standing in front of a crowd of people, all waiting to hear me speak. I was also not warned what I would be speaking about. All in all, I would absolutely take my wish back.
The people all seemed bored or exhausted and I couldn’t tell which but had a solution for both. “Alright,” I clapped my hands together, “how about we all sit down?”
As I sank to the ground and crossed my legs, thousands of eyes glanced around in confusion before eventually following my lead. I seemed to have their attention now.
“So!” I continued. “You have all come here to hear me speak. What is it you wish to know?”
More confusion spread through the crowd before one brave soul shouted. “We wish to know the meaning of life!”
“Naturally,” I muttered, then loud enough for everyone to hear, “what do you think the meaning of life is?”
“Making yourself as happy as possible!”
“Helping others?”
“Preserving the planet.”
“My,” I shook my head, “how different all of these answers are! So, if I were to tell you what the meaning is, how many of you would agree with me?”
They seemed frustrated. “Well, what do you believe the meaning of life is?”
“Think about the meaning of life this way, do whatever you must to get to the end of your life and not feel as though you have wasted it.”
That seemed to satisfy them, as I they all cheered and debated among themselves and I stood and ran the other way. I had a wish to go back on.
