The Trees Are Dead

Don't wake in the world where the trees are dead.

The last words said to me by my grandmother who passed away just a few weeks ago. She was a bright and wonderful woman but one day she began spouting about a world where all the trees are dead.

Everyone thought her age was finally catching up to her but I believed every word she never lost her train of thought so it was weird for her to begin saying these things.

Her house was left alone they did not know what to do with her belongings so I decided to stay there for a few weeks to look after the house

But I thought of getting to the bottom of what my grandmother was talking about.

The first night was weird sounds that seemed strange even stranger to noises of an old house but I sat in her bed. I thought about her and wondered if this world she talked about killed her she died unnaturally cause they said it was something they could not figure out.

That night I lay and the noise was present through the entire night and when I awoke nothing.

The house empty

No noise

The house just felt like something was wrong like something was there that shouldn’t be

The second night the noises started back again at night near the door of her bedroom. I crept over and slowly opened the door but nothing no sound.

But closing the door and walking back a faint voice came from behind the door

The trees were all I could make out

I jumped into bed and fell asleep as fast as I could

In a talk I had with my grandmother she said she heard a voice speak then when she fell asleep that night she was in that world she thought it was a nightmare.

Closing my eyes and listening to noise through the house was tense and nervous but when I fell asleep I woke in a field of dead trees and near black-looking grass.

The trees were withered away and slumped over every step crushing the dead grass below my feet it felt oppressive but what caught my attention was a noise

While walking through the forest I heard a voice

The trees are dead

I turned around but saw nothing I saw more dead trees with their limbs contoured and shriveled but looking closer at a tree it seemed like a body leaning over then it twitched

I jumped back in and out my skin almost the tree moved and stood right up it was not a tree it was the entity that was completely black like the dead tree long limbs and long fingers that could tear through anything by the look

It was skinny and tall it loomed over the trees like a building it had to be 10 feet tall

It stared and stared like it was reading me and what I was gonna do. I stepped back a few steps but then the creature stepped forward and where its mouth should be it looked smoothed over but it began to force its mouth open not by hand it just opened its mouth more and more until the skin ripped showing a bright red mouth it smiled. It smiled like it was forced wide and bloody

It took another step and I woke by a jolt from my mother she came by to see how I was doing. I stared blankly I could not put what I saw into words at that time my mother got me up and took me downstairs and then I was able to talk I just told her I had a bad dream but I could not get that smile, not my head it the body was skinny but it could contour it to make itself look like a dead tree.

Me and my mother talked about my grandma as she was in the kitchen

She stopped and spoke once more

“Aw that sucks,” she said with a sad voice

“What’s wrong” I asked

“Some of her trees are dead”
