The Wish Lanterns
I stared out to the bay.
Jacob would be here soon, and I would tell him the whole thing. Everything would be fine. Too bad I forgot the school was releasing the wish lanterns tonight. He showed up along with the school, a mischievous grin on his face. (clearly he didn't get the message that what I meant when I said _we_ should release wish lanterns together I meant _just_ him and I.)
That was Jacob all right. The curly blond hair, the green sandals with his tie-dyed shirt and swim shorts.
He looked like a surfer guy. “Hey Tulip,” he said walking over and winking at me. He was the school jokester, who knew what he had done now.
“Hey,” I tried to sound enthusiastic, (which did not work, clearly.)
His smile faded.
“Why did you ask me to come here… are you joking me? You’re gonna break up with me in front of the whole school?! Ok, ok. Here’s an awesome idea. Don’t break up with me at all. Hear me out-“
“Jacob,” I squeezed his hand, “I’m not breaking up with you.”
He breathed a sigh of relief. “Phew, that would’ve been embarrassing.” I raised an eyebrow. “And, and, I love you.”
I laughed. “Jacob, there’s something I need to tell you-“ one of his stupid friends interrupted. They did that way too much and it annoyed me.
“Be right back.” He ran over to his friends. I tried to calm down.
Although I did it by accident, it was a good thing I heard him say it. “She’s not who she says she is.”
Jacob turned to me, a look on his face I’d never seen before.
He knew.
My eyes welled up in tears, but I knew it was only a matter of time before Jacob turned around again, probably wanting me to be arrested… or worse.
I started at a sprint towards the beach on the far right, maybe I’d be able to climb the rocks. When I looked behind me, I saw Jacob and his friend Mark running in my direction.
Jacob had never looked at me that way, and I knew I only had one more option, but it would cost me my life here.
I drew a circle around myself, focused on the water, and wings sprouted from my back.
Thank goodness I’d learned to do this recently. Taking one last look at my old life, the water from my wings dripping on the ground, I flew upwards.
