Beautiful Screams
He arrived in the city on the 32nd of the month and the moment he stepped off the train the air began to tense up as though it knew that he was there. The sky swirled between a fierce navy blue and a wistful fleshy tone and the darkish clouds that floated amorously through it seemed to create their own little shapes. One was a unicorn, the other a racecar, one was a bloody piece of raw mutton. The sky was littered with birds too though they didn’t seem to be the most intelligent and constantly flung themselves from building to building as though hypnotised.James sighed and unfurled a polaroid picture from his pocket. It was exactly as he remembered it.Tattered at each edge and bleached with coffee rings and ink stains though each blemish on the glossy cover may as well have been a lipstick stain.Every night he’d stared at that picture it was as though he was staring into at something impossible like an infinite number of matchsticks but now each of those matchsticks seemed to swarm together until they created each peak of the buildings he gazed upon now.And it’s just as well too,he thought as he snuck the image back into his coat, because I’m just about to set it on fire.
