Ascension
My name is Shirai. I am 16 years old... I live in what is known as Dome D. 2 decades ago, humanity was ruined by an atomic war that broke out thanks to a war between the communist and socialist countries. Only a few million people survived thanks to the socialist allies teaming up to create the domes. Everything in the domes is controlled with high tech gadgets far beyond imagination.
Just a few months ago, something happened. The weather systems went haywire during a ceremony for the success of the domes, not including the deadly darkness that overtook one of the domes. Just a few years ago. Myself and 11 other kids were hospitalized in a coma for 2 months. Now, we have learned that we have superhuman abilities.
I myself can control various aspects of air, and weather. There are others like me. Now that we have awoken, and gone through rigorous training, we’re hunting down the individual responsible for the attacks. His name is Nikolai Victor. The child responsible for bringing one of the domes into total darkness, with storms, and so many disasters for several months. The government had tried to experiment on him but he escaped before they could do anything. According to what we were told, Nikolai wants to avenge the communist and bring back war and chaos.
And so, myself and the 11 other kids have been trained to use our powers for good. To bring down Nikolai. Now here we are. We made it to his supposed hiding place. One of the abandoned dome projects.
You could see the real world sky when you looked up. It was overcast. And dark. I could tell something was up. Maybe a storm? I sighed as I carefully stepped out of the abandoned hyperloop, helping the youngest out as well. I raised my watch towards me, tapping it before speaking. “We made it to the hide out... But I don’t see any sign of him. Other than maybe the stormy sky.”
There was no reply from HQ. I frowned as I felt the wind pick up and thunder rumble. A chill went up my spine, making me shudder. “Cmon. Let’s find a place to set up camp.” I said to the others, before heading down the hill. The broken city with vines and such over growing the sides, going up and through the buildings. It was disheartening. It was hard to tell what city or state or country it was supposed to be. Every dome was modeled after their real life counterparts. I felt the air go from warm to cold and shivered. It was definitely about to rain. Probably pour.
We trekked through the streets until we made it to a building that was still mostly standing. It looked like it was supposed to be a little restaurant. It was enough to give us cover if the weather got worse, or Nikolai tried something. We finished setting up sleeping bags and sheets to cover the entrance as a light rain began to fall.
The youngest, Alejandro, looked at me with his big green eyes. They seemed to twinkle in the light of the campfire. He went over to me as thunder rumbled outside. “Shirai, can I ask you something?” He asked.
I nodded as I sat down on my sleeping bag. “Of course. What’s up?” I asked him, taking off my jacket as I tried to relax.
I remember the look in this eye to this day. That look of... fear... no... terror. It was terror. And worry. True fear. Something I knew all too well.
“If I survive... can I go home?” He asked me.
I was going to reply but... I couldn’t. None of us had seen our family in two and a half years. I had asked a similar question to the agent who had taken us... he said, “Maybe one day, but not today. Now, back to work.” He said that every day I asked.
I couldn’t say no. I grabbed Alejandro’s shoulders as the wind gently pushed the blankets off the entrance, letting the rain in. “I promise you. As long as I am alive and breathing. We will ALL go home one day. Okay? I swear it.” I said.
“Right now... we have to save our families. So there’s a home to go back to.” I finished before going and putting the blanket back up.
I had to get us home... I had to. For all of us.
