My Man In Uniform

‘’ so, who’s going to die today, I wonder? “ detective, green side, rubbing his hand across his weary features. he sat kicked back in his office chair, his feet propped up on the desk. The office was dark, except for a small lamp on the corner of his desk, and beneath its soft glow, he looked older than he normally did. Green was a handsome man, with big brown eyes that always looked determined and salt and pepper hair. With more salt than pepper, but somehow I still found him so incredibly attractive. I wasn’t sure if it was his looks or his headstrong personality that made me adore him so much, but either way, I hated to see him so upset. He had been trying to catch this sick bastard for weeks now, and the worst part was that there was nothing I could do to help him.

I narrowed my eyes at him from where I was seated across from his desk. “Don’t be like that, honey, “I said softly. “You’re gonna catch this guy, I just know it.“

he leaned back in his chair, his gaze lifting to meet mine. "Darlene, it's not just about catching him. It's about justice, about stopping him before... before he takes another innocent life." His voice trailed off, the weight of the unsolved cases pressing down on him.

I reached across the desk, taking his hand. "I know, and you will. You're the best detective this city has. ‘’

He rolled his eyes before lowering them. ‘’ I don’t know about all that,’’ he muttered somberly. ‘’ if that were true, the son of a bitch would be behind bars already. Besides, you have to tell me that. You’re my girlfriend. ‘’

I couldn’t help but laugh at that one. We had been dating for a few months now, but still, it always ignited something fierce inside my heart to hear him say that word. ‘’ no baby. I mean it. And this motherfucker will do something to slip up. And when he does, you’ll be there.’’

He managed a weak smile, squeezing my hand. "I hope you're right. This guy... he's always one step ahead. Leaves no trace, no pattern. It's like chasing a ghost."he seemed so defeated, and I wished so badly there was something I could do for him. I racked my brain, trying to think as if I were a detective myself.

"That's because you're looking for a pattern," I said, leaning toward him. "But what if he's not following one? What if he's choosing his victims at random?"

He looked up at me, his brown eye sparkling with curiosity. ‘’ Random? Hm…’’ he repeated pensively, rubbing his 5 o’clock shadow in consideration. ‘’ That’s actually something we haven’t really considered. I mean, all five of the women he’s murdered so far have been different ages. But they have all been white, and they’ve all lived roughly within the same area. ‘’ he was talking more to himself than to me. He was in deep thought. I loved seeing him like this. When he was in this mode… These criminals didn’t stand a chance for very long.

The room fell silent for a moment, the only sound being the soft ticking of the clock on the wall. Then, the silence was shattered by the shrill ring of Green's phone. He snatched it up, his voice tense. "Green here."

I watched as his expression changed from weary to alert, his eyes widening as a toothy grin spread across his face,. "Yes, I understand. We'll be there in ten minutes." He hung up and stood, grabbing his coat.

"What is it?" I asked, my heart racing.

"That was the tip we've been waiting for," he said with a newfound energy in his voice. "Someone just spotted our suspect. It's time to end this."

He gave me a quick pec on the cheek before heading out the door. My heart melted in my chest. Not only was he about to stop a serial killer, but God he was the sexiest cop I’d ever seen. If he took this guy down, we were definitely going to celebrate later!
