STORY STARTER

Inspire by Grégorienne

A person who is good at everything, other than expressing their emotions, begins to fall in love.

Writing from this character's perspective, how do they handle it?

Marcella

“I failed my Statistics test,” I said offhandedly as I slapped a thick, steaming pile of cheesy scalloped potatoes onto my tray. It was my third year of university and by some miracle I still wasn’t sick of the cafeteria food.

“You’re fucking with me,” Jake replied, his arm freezing mid air as he reached for a brownie.

“For once I’m not.” Jake withdrew his arm and shook his head.

“Dude, you’ve never failed anything in your life. Especially stats.” He was right - this was my first time failing a test. My first time failing ANYTHING. Ever. I just nodded before making a beeline to an empty table, appetite suddenly long gone. Jake abandoned his brownie and raced after me, slamming his tray down on the table opposite mine. “What the hell happened?” He asked, expression incredulous.

“Marcella happened.”

“Marcella? What about Marcella?” I sighed, leaning back in my seat and running my hands through my hair. I closed my eyes and there she was, as always, smiling at me with her brown doe eyes and her freckled nose. I shook my head, clearing her image before I opened my eyes again.

“I think I’m in love with her.” If Jake’s jaw could have unhinged it would have.

“You’re in love with _Marcella_?!”

“I’m in love with Marcella.” We both sat in silence for several beats.

“Well, are you gonna do anything about it?”

“_Well_, apparently I have to if I want to keep my 4.0.”

“Okay… what’re you gonna do?” I sighed.

“I dunno. I think love might be the one thing I actually suck at.”

“That and now stats, apparently.”
