Be Kind, Rewind

I turned on the television to see what I could view, and had only been watching for an hour or two, when a commercial came on with a face that I knew, asking if I wanted to make more money. “I sure do!” She spoke as if speaking directly to me, offering career training or a GED, and told me I could even get a college degree, and she would send all the information to me toll free! I thought for a while because I wasn’t quite sure. I had never ordered anything on TV before, but I thought I might like to learn a little bit more, so I sent away for my free brochure. A couple weeks later the brochure was here, so I sat at my table with some chips and a beer, and searched through the list for the perfect career that I could learn from home in approximately one year. There was: computer programming and interior decor; office worker for dentist or doctor; artist, secretary, or conservator; auto mechanic, but wait there’s more… Hotel/motel management and child daycare; TV, VCR, and gun repair; and even a degree as an assistant where you can learn to assist lawyers with legal affairs. So many options, but I had to choose, and I figured there was one route where I couldn’t lose, so I filled out all the paperwork and paid the dues, and started learning skills I knew I would always use. For the next several years I was honing my craft, fixing half-loading arms and roller guide tracks, belts and reel brakes and tension bands at the back, idler clutches and cases that were cracked. Now times are changing and it doesn’t seem fair. I wander through the stores and am more and more aware, that I don’t recognize the new technology there, and that no one needs my expertise in VCR repair.
