WRITING OBSTACLE
Inspired by Junie
Write a story from the perspective of an owl at night.
How would their senses be different, and how could you describe this?
COMMUNICATION BARRIER
Two owls sat in the full moon light, high in a pine tree, watching a darkened dirt road that cut through their forest. Approaching them from down the road was the brightness of one of the human flashlights, and someone walking in their direction.
"Hey Frank, Go see who it is." The owl named Cliff suggested.
"Why don't you do it?" Frank turned his head clear around his head to give an accusitory stare at his fellow owl.
"Come on bird, Im resting my wings! I had to fly clear across the south woods to get here you know." Cliff complained.
"Fine, fine." Frank grumbled. Then he took off the high branch, going in for a closer look.
He landed on a branch near the road, and the human froze and looked right at him. Puzzled by this, Frank stared back at the... Female he could now tell, with his own wide eyes. For a moment both of them started at eachother. The girl human said something, but Frank could not understand her language.
"Hey, who is it!?" Cliff shouted from one of the higher branches.
"Its some girl!" Frank called back. "She's staring right at me!"
"What!? Really?"
"Yeah, thats odd, right? Its Kind of creeping me out." Frank shouted.
"Hang on, Ill be right down!" Cliff yelled back. A few seconds later he swooped in next to Frank on the lower branch.
"Whoah you're right, she's really staring you down!" Cliff agreed when he observed the scene.
Then the girl spoke some more gibberish and shined her flashlight back on to the road. She started to continue her walk, slowly. Peering back at the two owls weirily.
"Boy, she was giving you quite a look there Frank." Cliff noted. "It almost looked like she could understand you or something."
"What!? Thats perposterous." Frank said. "All they speak is that human nonsense. Does that talk make ANY sense to you?"
"Naw bird, it just sounds like some kind of hooting to me." Cliff said. "Anyways, lets follow her. See where she's going."
Frank shrugged. Both of them took to the air and caught up to the girl, passed her and then waited on another branch by the road for her to pass again.
"Say something to her this time." Cliff urged. "Maybe she will answer."
Frank leaned out towards the girl as she passed below. "Hey human! Nice night we are having isnt it?"
The girl began to walk a little more briskly, but this time did not look back. Instead she pulled up the hood of her hoodie and sinched it tight around her face.
"Try it again!" Cliff said.
"You try it, dammit!" Frank snapped. "Im tired of taking orders from you Cliff! You saw me do it. She just kept walking!"
"Thats because you're not doing it right, you gotta do it like this." Cliff said, and then flew to another branch catching up with the girl again. "HELLO HUMAN! WE COME IN PEACE! CAN YOU UNDERSTAND ME?"
The girl's brisk walk turned into a speed walk at that.
Out of the forrest came the unmistakable loud banter of a distant wolf. "HEY SHUT UP OUT THERE! IM TRYING TO SLEEP!"
"That damn wolf is howling at us again." Cliff said.
The two owls then once again got ahead of the girl, who was now starting to jog down the road. She looked like she was running from something now.
A third owl swooped in and landed on the branch above them. "Hey Steve." Both Cliff and Frank said unenthusiastically.
"Hey birds! Are you the ones making all that racket!? You really pissed off Bill the wolf you know!"
"Yes, Steve. We know. The whole forest knows." Frank said flatly.
"Well whats all the hubub about?" Steve asked, then suddenly spotting the girl. "Boy that human's in a hurry somewhere."
"Yeah, Cliff thinks she can understand us. I think Cliff turned his head around one too many times." Frank explained.
"THAT girl!?" Steve asked. Then he busted up into hysterics. "You really think she can hear you!? Oh come on even I am not that dumb!"
"Im telling you, Steve! She was giving Frank A LOOK! Lookin right at him, staring him down!" Cliff said.
"No way. Lemmie try!" Steve said. He took to the air, but instead of landing on a branch he decided to get in close and glide next to her head. "Hey there, what's your name?"
The girl now let out a terrifying scream and began to break out into a full run. She was outrunning Steve who was falling behind. "Hey... Wait up... slow down im tired!" Steve complained.
Steve landed on a nearby branch this time out of breath. The other two owls landed near him, watching the girl dissapear into the darkness, still letting out shrieks of terror.
"Welp. There she goes." Cliff stated the obvious.
"I wonder what she was doing out this late anyways." Frank said.
"Yeah... well... I dont think she understood me. . ." Steve said between breaths. "Those humans... they speak in that strange hooting language you know... I mean, do they even have words like us?"
"A species that dumb? Ha! Not likely." Frank laughed.
From the distance the wolf chimed in for the second time that night. "I SWEAR I AM EATING EVERY DAMN OWL I SEE FROM NOW ON!!!!"
"Welp birds, nice chat." Cliff said, and the three owls flew off in opposite directions.
