STORY STARTER

Who is Scarlet, and what makes her a suitable 'parent figure' to Lily?

Why Scarlet Matters In The Story

(Notes for my own book)

Scarlet is a friend of Anita's family. When Anita first finds out about the fact that Lily has nowhere to go, she firstly calls specifically for Scarlet. She's a great parent/aunt figure for Lily because she pushes her to change. She sees that Lily is struggling both with her mental health and her isolation, so she tries to make it better.

In book one, Scarlet is the one to plan all walks, parties or any "going outside to have fun" event. She makes sure it's never too overwhelming for Lily, and watches over both her and Comet. She probably introduced Lily as the daughter of her sister Violet who came to visit for some time, so that way no one in town would have questions about how the hell she had kid all of the sudden. Violet doesn't live anywhere near them, and never officially announced if she had any kids, but people DO know she has a partner.

Scarlet Dawn – Kind of an "everywhere" woman. Despite being quite famous, is basically just a dork. She drinks tea at 6 in the morning, with messy half-done ponytail, and talks about the weather. That type of person who knows everything about everyone, and is everybody's friend, but if you ask someone about HER they apparently can't recall a single thing. She takes in both Lily and Comet and takes care of them… just because. She doesn't have many close friends or a job, so she was mostly spending her time at home or in a cafe before Lily and Comet showed up. Her sister Violet and her family is one of the most famous families in town, so usually Scarlet solves all problems by commanding power (like getting Lily into the school without Lily having any legal documents)

Quotes/Conversation Cuts/Everything that helps me shape her character:

– Well, I don't believe in chosen ones. I believe in destiny and fate. And if you ended up here, that means it was supposed to happen. For someone else's happiness, or for your own.

—•

– Oh my dear sister Violet will not like that she would have to come all this way here just to sign her daughter's papers… So what if we think a little more, is there a way to get my lovely niece into this school without disturbing anyone?

—•

– I don't feel like going anywhere… – Lily sighted, laying her head on the dining table.

– And I'm not feeling like being a bad aunt! – She exclaims, taking the girl's hand and walking towards the entrance. Lily complies with another sigh, gesturing Comet to follow. Maybe a little walk isn't a totally horrific idea.

—•

– "Dawn"?…

– Yes? – Scarlet raised an eyebrow with a half-smile. – It's the last name of my family. And my name is Scarlet Dawn. Well, you know that. If your last name is "Dawn", it's a given to name your children like that. I suppose. I never actually asked parents about it.

– But if that's the case, and my name is Lily, isn't it a bit… Out of place, I don't know? Maybe I'm overthinking…

– That won't be a bother, – Scarlet waves her hand dismissively, and takes another sip of her tea. – Just say your full name is Lilac. As my sister's name is Violet, I think that actually fits surprising well. Almost like destiny brought you here, isn't that funny?

—•

– Wouldn't it be fun if your nine year old niece started dating before you, Lily? That's quite the story.

– Scarlet?! – Lily chuckled, looking up.

Note to self:

Maybe make Scarlet a former foster-parent?

Would that make sense? I really need to think about her past…

Because I wanter Lily to meet Scarlet's "family", but I'm not sure if I want Scarlet to have a partner?

Would be kinda funny if a random person on the street just walked to Scarlet and Lily with a loud "Mom! Haven't seen you around here in a while! Is that my new sibling?". And Lily just being completely lost as what they even mean.

That would certainly explain how Scarlet agreed to take Lily and Comet in her home so quickly, and why she had so much space and toys around

She might drop hints thought out the book, something like "No, caring for you is no trouble at all. I miss hearing kids play and run around"

That way, instead of her indirectly threatening a school director, they can just know each other very well, because she also registered all of her former kids here? She might say they can't officially sign Lily because there are problems with her family, or because her papers were destroyed, and because the director already knows Scarlet and knew all her kids they allow it?

She won't have to lie about Lily being her sister's daughter

I would have to think if that makes sense in the message of the book…
