Birds circled overhead and sharks circled underneath.

Jake and I looked at each other, and shuffled closer. The boat creaked as something bumped against the keel sending a shudder through the boat and a shiver down my spine.

‘Things ain’t looking too good’ he said with a smile. The sort of resigned smile that makes light of our situation.

I pull my hip flask out and take a pull of good sweet whiskey, pretending that I’m not shaking like a leaf and can be as cool in the face of danger as him.

‘You could say that’ and I pass the flask to him. ‘Any ideas?’ I ask, hoping but not expecting any reassurance.

‘Sure a couple of good ones’ the slow smile again as he raises the flask to his lips.

‘Don’t worry kiddo’ he says as the birds circle overhead and the sharks circle underneath.
