Play Area

Playgrounds. I remember the adventure playground in Holland Park as being quite scary. Didn’t get to go there often and it wasn’t really safe. Playgrounds in the 70s and 80s were a lot less safe than they are now. More sharp edges, rickety equipment, things that were flat out dangerous like trapezes,no safety locks on swings, and above all no soft place to fall. I remember being pretty much unsupervised in these places, hanging upside down off trapezes and tree branches from which I could have easily fallen. We used to wait until the swings were at their highest point and then jump off them. People my age are always talking about how dangerous things were when we were kids and all the harm we were constantly exposed to. I wonder if that was the same for folks my parents age and then grandparents age. Apparently the world is getting safer in some ways, but then it’s becoming more dangerous in others. Drugs maybe? Violence? But violence was prevalent when we were kids and nobody ever really even tried to stop it. It was just accepted as the way things were. Now there are a lot more people insisting that things simply don’t have to be the way they’ve always been.
