The Floral Shaw
“You’re birthday is just around the corner. Are you 20 or 25 this year?”mom said as she laughed at her own wittiness. “Momma-uh, I’m going to be 11 this year!!” As I laugh to make her feel funny. She always make my brother and I feel super special for our birthdays. Every year she gets us a card and signs it with “I am the luckiest lady in the world because of you!! Love, mom”. She opened the over to pull out the blueberry muffins and her phone rang, my brother is on the other end, in a panic.
“Hello? Tucker… ok ok calm down!! What is wrong??”
“Mom… MOM… come get me!! My truck is gone. I just got in a wreck!!!” She puts it on speaker, she turns off the oven, grabs her sock and shoes. She is giving him instructions and asking questions. I could tell she was scared. She grabbed a knee length, black, floral shaw and put it over her missed matched pajamas. I handed her her keys and she ran down the hallway towards the car.
I was two steps behind her when I noticed her shaw resembled a cape.
She speeds down the road, in the direction of the wreck, “ I don’t know why I grabbed this dress thing…?!?” I looked at her and wanted to help calm her down. “Every super hero needs there cape in emergency situations.” She reached over and squeezed my hand and said “thank you baby”. I saw tears in her eye and decided a little one of her jokes would be appropriate and I said “or it’s probably because you don’t have a braw on?”
She is weaving through traffic and we managed to be the 2nd people on the scene. She threw the car in park looked over at me and said “you are right… I grabbed this because I don’t have a braw on!!” She winked at me, kissed my hand and told me to stay in the car.
I watched her run the length of two houses, to get to my brother. Stunned in amazement, I watched her cape flap in the wind like superwoman. I realized that day, my moms wink was acknowledging, she is a real super hero.
