Against the stone wall of the cave, a scraping talon sounds...

Serious Business

1

Throwing one leg over, Sir Cedric Gain descended from his horse with practiced ease. In the sun’s early morning rays, he cut an impressive figure. His armor was a masterpiece of craftsmanship, intricately engraved with patterns of vines and heraldic symbols. In one of his gauntleted hands he held a great helm. Scabbarded at his side was a longsword, ready to be drawn at a moment’s notice. Beside him, two other knights - his brothers Fedric and Gedric - were similarly clad.

They were serious men, about serious business. They had come from the distant kingdom of Wycliff, by order of their king.

“Kill the beast, and spare no offspring. Do

this and I will make lords of you all.”

It was not a good offer. It would not have been a good offer, but for one small fact, beneath the king’s notice. The Gain family had a secret few knew about. A weapon, of frightening power.

“Bring it forth”, Sir Cedric commanded. His brothers hastened to obey. A large trunk, brown with age, was pulled from the back of a gelding, and dumped at Sir Cedric’s feet.

Together the knights stood at the mouth of a dark cavern. The slow drip of water from the cave’s ceiling echoed outwards to meet them. From deep within, against the stone of the cave, a scraping sound, not unlike a talon could be heard. Pulling a key from his saddle bag, Sir Cedric turned and declared, “It’s time.”
