When We Fall Into Skies
The chains on the swing clicked and screeched while I moved up and down, my hair flowed smoothly against the summer breeze.
I laughed while I kicked my legs up, flying and feeling myself drop again, all while peering up at the clouds wondering if I could fall into the skies.
I came to a halt and noticed a teenage couple laying in the grass. The girl had her head upon her boyfriend’s chest as she soaked in the light from the sun.
His fingers combed through her golden locks and gently traced the dimples upon her cheeks while she giggled at his gentle demeanor.
“Do you ever wonder if we can fall into the skies?” She asked. Her voice carried a soft, melodic tune, and I began to wonder if she were a siren calling to him.
The idyllic image of the two began to engrave a definition of love in my mind.
He smiled down upon her, his radiant caramel colored skin glowed from the rays of the sun.
His eyes were a deep brown and he looked up at the sky with a child-like innocence before answering, “I have wondered that before. Do you think it’s possible?”
His girlfriend hesitated before answering, “I don’t think it is possible. And if it were, wouldn’t we fall into the atmosphere and die?”
This answer surprised her boyfriend, and he replied quickly, “We don’t know that until we try. For all we know, we may fly into the Heavens and gain eternal life.”
She countered his argument cautiously, “But how can you be so ignorant? We must be rational and consider the negative outcomes first.”
“I am just speaking from the heart. Sometimes I think that you can be too sure of yourself. Pessimism will only lead to your end.”
“If you think I’m so pessimistic, why don’t you break up with me?” She spoke haughtily, and jumped up defensively.
The two continued arguing.
Decisively, I cleared my throat and spoke boldly, “I think both of you are compliments of each other. How can we live without both the head and the heart? I believe optimism and pessimism can be useful when they balance each other out.”
The couple looked at each other, and noticed not only the differences but the beauties in how they push each other to be their best selves.
“You’re right,” said the girl, “how could I make him think like me when he is his own authentic self?”
The boy smiled and grabbed her hand, “You have always been so kind.”
The two decided to remain together, knowing that God created the heart and mind to work together for the good of human kind.
