The Super Truth

I told him that I would help him find the city’s hero. The Fallen Angel. That is what the world called her. The first time they saw her, she was falling from the sky. They didn’t see her go up, they didn’t see what she stopped from hitting the earth, but they saw her fall. No one knew where she went. But every time there was a problem, they called upon her. To save them, to help others.

He is the law.

The Fallen Angel goes against everything he believes in.

He believes that she should be arrested.

He leads the task force that spends all their time looking for her and anyone who is like her. They have scientists working on cuffs and weapons to assist in the arrests. When push comes to shove, he will hunt her down, lock her in cuffs, and lock her away. He will expose who she is to the rest of the world and make sure she can’t fly from the realty of how the world works.

But he is also my best friend.

The one I am supposed to trust most in this world.

The only family I have ever had.

I played him. I lied to him. I manipulated him. All to keep him from find out the truth. I played the human, capable of being hurt. Getting ‘sick’ when I needed to hide what I was up to. Pretending I was exhausted after joining him on his morning runs. Sometimes I did so well that I forgot I wasn’t like him. I forgot that I was harboring a secret that could make him hate me forever.

Then he went missing.

A ‘fan’ with powers in strength and an uncontrollable anger took him to send a message on his own. He wanted the Taskforce taken apart. He wanted people like him to be worshiped like Gods. That goes against everything The Fallen Angel stood for. She only wanted to protect people the best she could. And that included the man hunting her. They may not agree on her role on the world, but he was still a good man. And she would protect him too.

It didn’t take long for her to find where he was being held. Her ‘fan’ wanted her to know where he was defending her honor. When he got there he smiled, excited to see her while his hostage was taped to a chair bleeding from the top of his forehead. She worried for him, but he wasn’t the problem. She tried to talk to her ‘fan’, but the moment he realized she wasn’t on his side, all forms of peace vanished. She couldn’t just think of herself. She had to think of what he would do if he won this battle. Hit, punch, block, kick, punch, block. By the end, she was beaten, bloody, but he was knocked out on the floor in front of her. She heard the break of the chair and the hostage was no longer a hostage anymore.

His job was to arrest her even if she just saved his life. He got out of the chair, ripping off the tape, and stepping towards the two supers on the ground. The Fallen Angel looked up at him. He had never been this close to her. No one had ever been this close to her. There had been no pictures of her face. She held her breath, locked in his gaze. A mask couldn’t hide that face. The face he looked at almost every day. The face he’s seen in a mask multiple time. The face he knew was his best friend.

I knew what he knew. We were the same person and I couldn’t hide it anymore. “I’m sorry.” I said and he turned away from me. “I can only imagine what you are thinking.” I pushed myself up from the ground.

“What I am thinking?!” He snapped, turning to look back at me. “This whole time you have been lying to me. I have been hunting you and you didn’t think to tell me. Do you have any idea how close we actually are to having a way to find you?”

“I know. I have people who tell me things. Keep me informed. I was just scared.”

“How did you think I would feel if I arrested you? If I showed up and it was you. I noticed now, I would have noticed then. Then I would never be able to forgive myself.”

I watched him. He wasn’t just mad because I didn’t tell him. He wasn’t just mad because I was her. He was mad he wouldn’t be able to protect me.

I could feel the tears of relief threatening to fall down my cheeks. “I didn’t want you to hate me.”

He sighed, stepping closer to me and looking into my eyes. “I could never hate you. You’re the only family I got and you always protect your family.”
