The Kid (part 6)

(Wolf pov)

Leona glanced at me.

“Hey wolf.” She said.

“Yeah.”

“I know a place were you can lie low. Back home I have a tree house. My sister Laya never goes in it. It would be the perfect place.” She said. I thought about it for a minute. A tree house in the city wouldn’t be a place Amon would think to look… but the closer I get to Leona the more danger I put her in. Finally, after a good few minutes of thought, I agreed.

It had been a few days since then. I had been living in Leona’s treehouse.

“My sisters boyfriend is coming over tonight.” She said.

“Really, who is it?” I asked.

“Some guy named Amon.” Leona answered.

A crushing feeling swallowed me. Leona didn’t know that Amon was the one who kidnapped her, that he was the one who started the wildfire, but out of all that, she didn’t know that Amon was my brother. How could I tell her? I could only think of one answer, I couldn’t. Amon would soon figure out that I was living there, the only way to keep Leona safe was to let her go.

“Wolf are you okay?” She asked.

“Oh, yeah I’m… I’m fine.” I said.

“Okay.” Leona said. It was clear she wasn’t buying it. “Well I better go back inside. Bye wolf.” Leona said with a smile. Leona left the tree house. I picked up a piece of paper off the floor. Then I found a pen. I wrote down my apologies. I promised that one day I would tell her everything, but right now what was most important was that she was safe and she would only be in danger if I stayed. I put the note on the small desk in the corner. With that I leaped out the open window to the roof of the house nearby.

I leaped from roof to roof. A car began to drive by on the road. I looked at it, and Amon stared at me back. I gasped for air. Amon didn’t stop the car. If he did it would only cause suspicion. I continued to jump from roof to roof, until I ended up in the woods. They were still burned from the fire, and the smoke smell still lingered, but I couldn’t put Leona in more danger. So this was my new home, at least for the time being.
