For The Love Of The Country

How far will one actually go for the love of their country?

Rebecca Daughtry started her usual day this bright fall day in 1970, with a cup of coffee and blueberry scone before her husband and two children awoke. She contemplated her life as a child in Russia compared to the life of her children in the USA, Baltimore, Maryland to be exact.

She remembered her childhood as carefree and privileged, a very happy and peaceful memory as she thinks of her Children’s childhood similarly.

Certainly seems simple enough, right? However, in the life of a spy………..

Douglas Daughtry came into the kitchen 20 minutes later followed by Emma Louise, 12 years old and Andrew Steven, 10 Years old. It was a typical Morning with Douglas scoffing down a black cup of coffee and dry piece of toast yelling at the kids to hurry up out the door otherwise they’d have to take the bus to school. The kids grabbed their strawberry pop tarts and ran out the door behind him.

Douglas wanted to get to the book store to complete last minute paperwork before opening for the day. Rebecca would meet him there later after taking care of some errands.

As Rebecca put on her coat and grabbed her purse, the phone rang. The shaky female voice on the other end asked for Douglas Daughtry. Rebecca responded saying she was his wife and asked what she could do to help this person looking for her husband. The female voice introduced herself as Anna and wanted to confirm her meeting with Douglas for later that evening. Rebecca took the message and told Anna she would relay it to her husband.

Later that evening, as Rebecca was sitting at the kitchen table with Emma and Andrew finishing their dinner, Emma asked, why there are some nights her father goes out alone all dressed up. Rebecca thought for a moment, how best to handle this question and realized it was so much simpler when both kids were younger.
