Risk Guaranteed
“Focus. What matters most to you? Security or fulfillment? You must make a choice.“
Walking out of her therapy session Eva felt woozy. When it came to life-changing decisions, Eva was the last person anyone considered for such matters. She had successfully avoided making big decisions all her life, always leaning on her loved ones to decide for her. If it were up to Eva, she would do anything in her power to have the best of both worlds but alas, we all know life is not that simple.
On one hand, choosing security was not half bad. It meant stability, a constant in her life. Plus, no one can argue that the feeling of familiarity is comforting. But was that worth not pursuing her heart’s desire? She literally described security as “not half bad.” Does that mean that she'd been dismissing the half-bad portion of it all just because it was habitual?
Then there was fulfillment to consider. Immediately her gut said, “that’s way too scary to even risk it.” I mean, what are the chances she would actually find someone who would love her as much as she wished to be loved?
It’s important to note that Eva wanted to be loved the way women are loved in telenovelas. She wished for a man who would propose with big gestures, surprise her with planned dates and show her off as his most prized possession. She wanted passionate sex and timeless kisses. Would chasing fulfillment really guarantee that?
Eva had a vision for her life. It would be unfair to compare her current situation to her dream, right? Eva certainly thought so. Many of the decisions that lead her to this office talking to a therapist were based on fear and her successful avoidance of taking chances. It was easier thus far to pick comfort over opportunity.
This time Eva proceeded differently.
With a big, deep breath in - Eva opened the door and entered the room. Michael was sitting on the blue sofa they bought together at the furniture store last April. The look they shared felt eternal. Michael knew her answer, Eva was leaving. Her drive to get what she felt she deserved was greater than the life she built had with him.
Eva sat next to Michael with certainty in her heart. What she was about to do next would change Eva in unexpected ways. Little did she know that something even bigger was about to happen the very next day.
