Absence
The wind howled by. Not one soul could be seen for miles. The form of a man lurking in the shadows of an abandoned building. He creeps slowly forward, hood pulled over his face. The only thing you could see is his glowing red eyes as they taunt you. Telling you what you already know. There is nowhere to run. You search desperately for something to defend yourself with. Your eyes land on a broken metal pole laying on the ground. You pick it up but have the odd feeling that it will not save you from this beast. As the man gets closer you notice that the ring on his right hand is that of a skull and to cross bones. Engraved with silver and rubies as the eyes. You know immediately what this means. You can’t let him near you, your life depends on it. Your sister trapped with the Black-bloods needs you to rescue her. You can’t give up now after how far you have come to save her. As he nears enough to reach you you realize you still have a little crystal dust in your pocket. It won’t be enough to kill him but maybe it will distract him long enough for you to get away. Just as he reaches out to grab you you throw the dust in his face. He tears away from you howling and screeching as he claws at his face. This is your chance to escape. You dart around running at top speed then transform into your wolf going even faster as you enter the forest. You know the beast has recovered and has come after you again but you are to fast in your wolf form for him to catch up. You run for as long as you can not daring to stop in the middle of the forest. You know the dangers that lurk here as the moon rises. You use your senses to navigate. To the next town over knowing a spot where you can rest and no one will find you. As you near the building that was once the library for this now abandoned town, you shift back into your human form throwing on the spare clothes you always carry for cases like this and enter the building. You head to the back that was once the forbidden section of the library, pulling down on the statue of a howling wolf. A hidden doorway opens showing stairs leading down. You head down the stairs but stop suddenly when you hear voices. You step closer so you can hear better.
“We need to find her,” a male voice states. “She is our only chance at ending this war.”
“No I refuse to put an innocent child in danger. I don’t care about the prophecy, she is not ready for this type of pressure.” A woman says, replying to the man.
“Aspynn is more than ready to lead us to the peace and victory we need.” The man replies back to the woman.
At this moment you realize that they are talking about you. You step out from your hiding spot as you determine that these people are not enemies. The man stands facing your direction with salty grey hair and beard. His face is lined with scars as though he has seen more than his fair share of battles. The woman in front of him is older with wispy white hair. As she walks to a table with a map spread out on top. As you examine her face you can see the wisdom in her eyes as she studies a certain area on the map. The man then turns and notices you standing there half hiding in the shadows. His eyes look alert as if he is ready for any possibility.
He calls out to the woman, “Sania, we have a visitor.”
The woman turns with a start and sees you standing at the foot of the steps.
“Aspynn?” The woman named Sania says in a whisper.
You think hard trying to remember where you know this woman from. As you are watching her a single year escapes from her eye. It is in that moment that you remember where you know her from. She is your grandmother from the pack your mother is originally from. Your eyes widen at the realization and tears leak from your eyes. It had been so long since you’ve seen a friendly face especially one that you know.
