WRITING OBSTACLE
Submitted by Maranda Quinn
Show a powerful emotion – love, grief, rage - in a quiet, everyday moment.
Instead of writing a dramatic and drawn out scene, think about how subtle actions and sensory details can carry the weight of the feeling.
Pronounced
fingers quivered at the touch
ice cold, the slightly darker shade
hovered over the other
spiked hair, meticulous, for this occasion
the other with newly painted nails, lovely and
emerald green
vice versa, who was over dressed.
the young man was beet red
sweat on the brow, the dirt washed from his fingertips
i could see her, her reflection in those very fingers
surmising what the difference was, what felt different, until that very moment
silence
The drop of nothing
and gibberish, and a Yes.
and a Yes.
And a Yes
A Yes
A Yes Yes YES
I looked at my coworker. A stain on their finger.
Red blemish
Oh the years I knew them. Oh the memories we shared.
That very table
We were pronounced too.
Now they serve and smile
Serve and smile
We meet, together, at the abyss here.
