The World Is Far Too Large
As the train screeched to a stop I shoved the extra cash in my pocket. I boarded the train and took an empty seat across from a young gentleman, he couldn’t be over 25. I plugged my earplugs into my phone, pushing both the left and the right ones into my ears, something I rarely do, but hey there’s a first time for everything. I opened my music app and clicked play on my playlist. The songs drowned out any surrounding noise as I sat there for a bit, my stop was only a little bit away from here. As the train pulled to a stop, I tugged my headphones out of my ears. I got off of the train only minutes after I boarded, as I started my way back down the along the side of the tracks. As I passed a troubled gentleman laying on a bench in a tattered and old trench coat I fumbled with the few hundred dollar bills in my pocket. I walked over to where he was sleeping, carefully pushing four, one-hundred dollar bills into his oversized pocket of his coat with a small sticky note attached that read, “Take care of yourself.” With a small heart in the left corner of the yellow paper. I left myself with another hundred dollar bill tucked into my pocket. I walked over to my convince store grabbing a Kit-Kat and a few other candies that I had never tried, placing them into the small basket, walking to grab a few more things. I glanced at the bottle of medication before adverting my attention to the cash register walking towards the cashier. I set the items down onto the conveyor belt, grabbing a White Monster Ultra from the fridge before placing it next to the other items. As she rang up the items I found myself glancing back to the bottle. “I need to get another thing it will only take a second.” I explained to her before waking back to the medication bottle that read, “Tylenol mega size! 250 capsules.” I grasped it in my hand before giving it to the cashier to ring up. She didn’t take a second glance at me unlike how I expected. I paid her with the remaining money I had before sprinting out of the store with the items, not bothering to collect the change. I put the headphones back in my ears, walking back to the tracks, dropping down onto the rails, sitting down in the middle of the old, rigid, wooded tracks. I turned the volume to the max as I placed the note I had written prior to leaving the city I was so familiar with on the stone ledge. “Dear whoever reads this note, my name is Carlton Lee Springer. I’m 17 years old and I’m bisexual. The world is far too large for you to’ve known me beforehand so I guess I’ll get straight into it. I left my home at 15, leaving everyone I’ve ever known. I lived in a town roughly 3 hours away for my entire life. By the time you find this I’ll be far gone. The world is far too large for it to matter anyways…” The note sat on the ledge folded neatly as I grabbed my candies and my energy drink. I popped open the bottle and poured around 30 capsules into my shaky hands. I sat there for a minute, staring down at my hand. I popped open the energy drink, putting the pills into my mouth taking a swig of the energy drink, pushing the astonishing amount of medication down my throat. I closed my eyes softly, letting tears stream down my face. I could hear the train blowing it’s horn in the distance. As the train approached the lights getting brighter the closer they got, I knew that I didn’t want to die. Suddenly, a man grabbed my arm, pulling me onto the ledge. The train passed as soon as I was pulled onto the ledge. “Hey! It’s ok calm down.” He exclaimed as he sat on the ground with me, pulling me into a hug. “I-I I’m so sorry!” I felt myself breathing in and out as if I was suffocating in my own damn thoughts. “Have you taken any medication?” The man questioned and I nodded my head frantically. He whipped out his phone dialing 999. I didn’t want to die but the world was far too large for it to matter.
