Sunshine
“Put it under your tongue and wait for it to dissolve; don’t move it around, just wait.”
Marcie handed me the small pill, oval in shape and thin. On its surface was a stamped cross. They called the pill ‘sunshine’ from the euphoric places it was said to bring to whoever took it. I say places, because that’s what made this drug different: a trip on this drug brought you into a different world. Everyone agreed on that. But not everyone saw the same place. Some people came down and said they saw Hell itself; some saw their grandmother’s house. My friend Don said he couldn’t describe what he saw, that it was too pure for words. Stressed with work, school, and a recent breakup, I wanted a new world.
I put the pill under my tongue and waited, watching as Marcie did the same and smiled. She closed her eyes and sat back.
“Ow long ‘til it dissolve?” I stammered, trying not to move my tongue.
Marcie put a finger to her lips to hush me.
And then it hit - and I saw Marcie only she wasn’t Marcie, she was a humanoid creature that wore a crown of roses. Her nose became a snout and teeth grew upwards from her lips. I shivered and pushed myself back as Marcie looked at me and had a similar reaction. I put my hands to my face and felt that I was unchanged. So Marcie must be the same, too … It was the sunshine.
But then Marcie disappeared entirely with the room around us, and for a split second all I saw was darkness. Then, the new world revealed itself to me in a blaze of shimmering glory. The floor was made of plasma and I was standing in it, outside, faint mountains in the distance. Marcie appeared next to me, her snout turned towards the sky. She pointed upwards with a paw. I followed her gaze to see my loved ones floating there, only they were all distorted like Marcie. And they were no longer alive; grandmothers whose funerals I had attended; my brother whose wake I had spoken during. But here they were, floating, changed, human-like but eerie in their own way.
The creatures danced above us in the clouds as we marveled at the sky. We had not expected to find a world as amazing as this.
And when the sunshine wore off, almost a full day later, I found Marcie huddled with her dog, pictures of my grandmother and a letter I had written to my brother in my lap.
