I Didn't Expect To See Her

When I decided to take a walk through the woods that day, I didn't expect to see her.

An unplanned walk usually consisted of hours of me looking at all the nature, soaking everything in. It was my only chance to get away from the duties that awaited me back at home, inside the tall, brick walls. She might have been in disguise; perhaps she was one of those magical beings I had only heard tales about.

And the hair! It was something else I tell you, no one in our kingdom had locks quite like that. Her garments too were quite unlike those worn at home. Though, maybe they were worn by the lower class. I wouldn't know; father and mother always say it's not becoming for a future leader to mingle with those beneath her. But, if everyone is beneath me then is there anyone for me to befriend?

I watched from afar at first, sizing up the new creature from a safe distance. After a little while, I drew a little closer. The strange thing seemed startled at first, before breaking out into what might have been the faint ghost of a smile. It was hard to tell though, her face was unclear through all that hair.

The girl turned and fled, looking back at me one last time before disappearing into the thick berry bushes. I returned to that slot for months, hoping to catch another glimpse of the stranger girl, but I'm sorry to say that was the last time I ever saw the small blonde girl in the gentle pink dress.
