Sun
This is what the little girl asked me. I was of course tempted to tell her that the sun is not sentient. It is not a person or an animal so technically it is impossible for it to feel lonely. Then I began to think about various Sun gods including RA and wondering if they were considered to be the Sun itself ever or whether they were separate entities. Indeed it seemed as if the gods certainly had feelings and that gods were very emotional and expressive. I thought also about indigenous mythologies and whether or not the sun was personified in any of them. I had to then come to the conclusion that indeed it was possible that the sun did in fact get lonely in the firmament but that there was a time when the moon passed in front of the sun and that at that time the sun was not in fact lonely because it was communing with the moon and sharing its light. This got me thinking that in some ways the sun is the unsung hero lighting our way at night while the moon gives the sun some rest and gives us a rest from the sun. The sun cannot help but burn. The moon is the balm.
