Ten Percent
A cheesey pop song played over the speakers.
Cheers and whoops came from the mass of packed guests. The Bride had already changed into a shorter dress and was currently gyrating on the dance floor like a drunk muppet. Her new husband, seemed to approve.
Tucked away in a back corner, I sat. A lone table all to myself. My leg bounced as I stared blankly at my drying phone, just scrolling endlessly through the home screen.
I’d had already payed my pleasantries, congratulated the couple, made small talk.
Yet here I was, still.
Maybe I stayed in commitment to my dear friend, who was now throwing her boutique to the music choice of “All the single ladies.”
Or maybe I was still just trying to work up the nerve to say goodbye. And be the first to leave, before dinner and cake.
I let out a tortured groan. My phones battery turning red at ten percent.
Exhaustion pulsed behind my eyes. A drowsy feeling that even sleep wasn’t going to touch.
Just alone time. Away from people.
Away from here.
As I stared at my dwindling phone life, a pair of black shoes entered the corner of my vision,
My eyes gazed up, up the slightly disheveled suit. His baby blue bow tie was cocked eyed and loose around his neck. His boutonnière still on his suit. The best man.
He smiled, a smirk more like.
“Have you danced yet?” He asked, his tone confident yet somewhat slurred. He offered his hand. “May I have your first?”
Oh God…
