Dusk And Dawn
He had fallen into a haze of blood, duck, dodge, and kill. The sun was just falling off the edge of the world, when the battle finally started to slow. The castle had been breached at dawn, him and the queen had been separated early on when she had been riding the civilians out of the back city gates.
He knows she is around somewhere, can see the giant dragon circling above the battle field with its bellowing spirals of red flames. The cuts his way through the masses as the dragon makes another swoop overhead. The guards at his side cutting down any stragglers. The dragon circles the sky where he knows the queen will stand with her own sword and silver hair.
The instant panic sets in when her dragon falls from the sky with a mighty screech. It’s wings curl around it’s body as it crashes into the ground and shaking them all to their knees. He knows the queen had always been reckless, impulsive in her blinding rage. When a child or dragon was hurt. Knows that she could die before he gets there.
He is running then, the thundering feet behind him as their enemies are killed and all the knights join him. His heart isn’t beating, his thoughts aren’t running, his blood isn’t pumping.
All he knows is run.
Think ropes of smoke fill the sky from the dragons mouth and he knows the queen will be near. He reaches the circle of red covered warriors who work for a would-be king. He cuts down every man in his path before he breaks the inner circle and sees the queen bury her dagger into the would-be kings throat.
She laughed, and if he hadn’t been so relieved to see her alive, he would have laughed too.
He joins her in the fray as they ruin the enemy forces. Afterwards, as they pile the body’s in the wagons and put out the fires, everyone helps carry the dragon back to the castle.
He is so very glad their queen is still alive.
