STORY STARTER
Submitted by Lana Rose
Time keeps randomly stopping around you, and you think it is you who is doing it. Then one night you are at a party, and time stops. Everyone is frozen, except one person at the other end of the room...
Anomaly In Motion.
I used to think I was just unique. The ability I possessed made me something so very different from everyone else. Time stood still on a whim for me. This was quite literal to it seemed as if I could stop time in its tracks. No one around me would move other then myself. It was like some sort of matrix I could jump into and just pause life. I noticed this happening for a while, but never understood it. When the pauses first started they scared me. As though I had left the human constraints of time and motion. Everything stood still around me like I had defied the laws of the physical world. I had started to gain control over it after a while like I could pick, and choose when the stoppages would occur. I used this trick to help in minor tasks in life. Not having enough time to copy the teachers notes on the board was no longer a problem. I could just stop time and there writing in there tracks. Having trouble guarding someone in a basketball game no problem just slow down time. It was becoming very convenient for me to be able to regularly do this. Controlling time had become a super power specific to me but I had no idea why or how. There was no major traumatic event I knew of, or radiation poisoning. The lack of rhyme or reason for this power to appear was always somewhat unsettling. It caused a major shift in my thinking. I had always been an average somewhat shy person. Being able to cause a rift in time had opened my confidence up to a new level. Turning me from an average teenager with decent grades, and minimal
athletic ability. Into a much better student and athlete purely based on the manipulation of time and motion. The original stoppages of time were frightening because I didn’t realize I wasn’t effected by them. I believed at first I was frozen like everything in my vision. When I soon realized I was still free to move about on my own this opened my eyes to the world i had been missing. A world lacking anxiety. A world were I didn’t have to question my decisions. If I made a wrong decision it was easy enough to just pause everything, and reverse it with no one being any wiser. Everything changed the night of the party however. Me and a few friends had decided to go to a party across town. A mutual friend was throwing a party for all of the seniors to attend. Parties always seemed like a perfect setting for my powers. I could undo any akward interaction, or change the timing of any encounter to my own benefit. When we arrived to the house i had an eerie feeling. Unsure of why I felt this way I just let it slip my mind. I should have listened to my gut instinct when it said something was imminently wrong. Once inside the party I grabbed a drink and proceeded to mingle a little bit. Suddenly time began to slow. I hadn’t done this or even felt the need to slow things down. I stood there holding my drink dumbfounded as I realized time was literally standing still. “I didn’t do this what the hell is going on” I thought to myself. While I surveyed the room I noticed everything was exactly the same as when i had previously stopped time in its tracks. Except I didn’t do this or even began to imagine it. As I scanned the room looking at the frozen bodies of the party goers I froze myself. Sitting across the room from me was a silhouette I hadnt ever noticed. It had a pale soft looking face. Extremely clean, and clear white colored skin. The creature had a dark hood pulled up over its head. When we locked eyes i froze in my tracks. It then flashed me a grin that sent chills down my body. As astonished as I was I couldn’t move or even began to speak. The only thought going thru my brain was to restart time. As I tried and tried nothing happened the figure began laughing as it started approaching me. The closer it got the more human it began to look. The features began resembling a stoic serious man, but it wasn’t anyone I recognized. Once it was about five feet away it stopped and stared deep into my eyes. The man’s face turned to a scowl. He then asked me how long I thought I’ve been special? The question chilled me to the core. Obviously the man knew of the power I possessed, or thought so at least. Between the fear, and the tension in the room I couldn’t even begin to form a response. That’s when the men reached out his hand and said walk with me child. Paralyzed by fear I couldn’t refuse. Following the man outside of the party I began noticing everything looking dimmed outside. The setting sun was almost completely down leaving the skyline a tint of reddish yellow. Beyond the sunset though the skyline looked murky in the opposite direction. As I was observing my environment around me I noticed no one else had began moving again. Just me and, whatever, or whoever this man was could move against time. I began to ask the man his name but was ignored. He began speaking to me about trials and tribulations of humanity. Detailing egregious acts of war. Unsure of what this had to do with me, or the stoppage of time my drifted for a moment. The man noticing my lack of attention stopped. Turning back to me he asked, “you really don’t know who I am do you?” No I replied timidly. He said I’m your guardian angel sent to protect you from an early demise. The stoppages in time have been me. I’ve been keeping you from instances of death throughout your life. Everyone experiences there own personal version of this. No one else can see us at the moment because I’ve frozen the timeline your attached to. Everyone else right now could actually be doing the same thing we are just in there own time loop. The angels are instructed to look after humans for a pre determined amount of time. “God put purpose into each one of your bodies” said the angel. “Our job is to keep you safe long enough to fufill that purpose.” “What happens once we fufill our purpose?” I asked meekly. “Then we have no more duties of protecting you” said the angel. “Typically you humans perish shortly after.” “Why are you here telling me all of this then?” I shouted. At some point in every humans life we make our appearances known we just don’t always get seen by the humans. You happened to catch me in the room as I stopped to watch over you. Why were you watching over me at this party? The party is going to end in a huge fight and a few kids are gonna be involved in a car accident trying to run from the party. I had to make sure your not involved as you haven’t found your purpose yet. Once you find your purpose both my work, and yours will be done. This was the last quote the man made before vanishing into thin air.
