A State of a Once Better Past
Sometimes I wish to return
To the desert valleys
Of the dry heat
That is Central Arizona
As a young child
Going somewhere new
From the gloomy east
To the evershining west
Living in the eye
The eye of red mountains
Rocky formations
That danced, a sight to see
All the weekends
I stared at red skies
And the Skies stared back at me
As I wondered, what I was
Were they speaking to me maybe?
Foolish person I started as
I took that place for granted
Left it behind, thinking I’ll find
I’ll find something more
Soon to be a mistake
I instantly regret
I look back
And it left behind me too
It’s not the place that once seemed
A place you can only see in dreams
Now its but a shallow husk
Of what made it a place to live you must
Maybe one day I’ll return
Can’t say it will be soon or now
If I do, I will just hide
In the mountains themselves
Where integrity still resides
