STORY STARTER
Your main character, who scams people for a living, gets a taste of their own medicine.
The Fool
“The cards read great fortune.” I declared, flipping them over dramatically. A fortune, knight of one’s, and lovers are laid out on the table. A grin crosses my face. “And perhaps true love.”
The two girls laugh excitedly across from me. Both bleach blonde and sun kissed skin. They tip generously before leaving, not noticing the absence of rings on their fingers.
I shuffle the cards, resetting my order.
The curtain opens, and in walks another woman. Her eyes dark and skin pale. Black curls caressed her face. Her lashes long and thick. “My my, what a set up.” Her voice is smooth.
“Why welcome madam, might i interest you in a card reading? Or palm reading perhaps?” My coy smile growing. “You’d be surprised what you discover about yourself.”
“Hhmm perhaps…” She sat down on the chair next to me and peered from under her lashes. “I’m a hard person to read.”
“I’ve heard that before. Trust me, I’m good.”
“Might I try to read you?” She asked, reaching out a hand over the table. “Free of charge.”
I chuckled but decided to indulge her, sliding over my hand. She took my palm, tracing her delicate fingers against the lines and groves.
“Hhm, you’re hard working, a real entrepreneur.” A smile graces her lips. “Life’s hit you hard in the past.”
“You’re good.” I sighed out, gently holding her hand.
Her eyes flicked back up to mine, her dark gaze fiery. “You’re also a cheat, a liar and a thief. But I don’t need to read your hand to see that.”
“Excuse you?” I tugged my hand back as she suddenly stood.
“We invented the game, **Gadjo**.” She sneered and with that she spun on her heel and walked out.
I felt my pockets, realizing my wallet was gone, swiped good and neat. I ran out of my little tent, glancing around the crowded street. But she was already long gone.
