I’ll Be Home For Christmas
It was finally here
Christmas Day
With tons of gifts
Under the tree they’d lay
Although there were many
I was most hopeful for one
That my father would come home
And celebrate with his son
He’d left us 5 years ago
My sister, mother, and I
Without any warning
Not even a goodbye
But he sent us a letter
Claiming when I turned thirteen
He’d visit for Christmas
And that wasn’t a scheme
I really did believe him
And waited for that day
I’d tell him about my life
I had so much to say
And when it was time
He drove through the woods
Ready to greet us
And bring us some goods
He was halfway there
When he heard a pop
His car slowed down
And he was forced to stop
In the middle of nowhere
His tire deflated
He had no service
So he just simply waited
The day went by fast
While he sat near the street
And was completely alone
With nothing to eat
He realized he should walk
Although he could barely see
And try to find a path
Maybe one that lead to me
He plowed through the snow
His whole body aching
Hoping to come home to warmth
And sugar cookies baking
He wouldn’t make it in time
No matter how hard he’d tried
Our bedtime was soon
And he was still outside
Lost in the fog
Alone in the deep
Bound by a promise
That he couldn’t keep
