Look Closer

I stare sometimes,

At the tea cup, that is,

The one that I put my very British tea in.

But if I looked closer,

I would notice its intricate design

And excessive size.

I stare sometimes,

At the old carpet, that is,

The one that Mum bought,

When we were still young.

But if I looked closer,

I would notice the yellow stain

Upon those fading patterns.

I stare sometimes,

At my mum, that is.

The now 73 year old woman,

Who gave birth to me.

But if I looked closer,

I would notice the worry in her eyes

And the beautiful way she always tries

Her best for all of us.

But I don’t look closer

And now, I really must.
