POEM STARTER

Write a blank verse poem on a topic that's important to you.

Blank verse poetry doesn't rhyme, but has a very strict structure which builds a melody through rhythm. (One way to create this is to structure each line with the same amount of syllables, and the same syllabic stresses, like you might if you were writing the verses of a song.)

A Dying One (2)

I'm drowning — but, then, how could I complain?

These waters are still clean; the dirt below

Will never dare contaminate my view,

As we prepare our comfortable descent.

They slit our throats with golden knives (our own),

While we're still suckling from bright silver spoons

Filled with a formula of ignorance:

Cheap gratitude for granted gifts of God.

We watch those children scream on live TV,

Then turn it off in time for morning tea.

_Well, that's too bad, but war ain't up to me._

We shed a tear, donate to charity,

Then go about our business. _Damn, I'm sick_

_Of all this work and all this crap to do —_

_Who needs this stuff, these opportunities?_

_Who's privileged? No, not me. I struggle too._

And every man finds that he is dying.
