COMPETITION PROMPT
Every day, you receive a call from an unknown number at the exact same time. When you answer, you're met with only silence. But today, that changes.
And The Sun Finally Rose
“Four twenty eight,” I glared at the white ceiling of my room, “In the morning.”
“Every. Single. Freaking. Morning.”
I am 50 shades of done with whoever kept calling me at 4:28 am everyday. That was a whole half hour of sleep I keep missing out on getting. A whole half hour! At first, I had tried to block the number, the call did come on my cell after all. But, it just didn’t work. Then, I placed a few VPNs, spam blockers, and call re-routers on my phone, it still didn’t work.
Everyday, at 4:28 in the morning, my phone would ring on the loudest volume. It didn’t matter how many times I put it on silent, how many times I switched numbers, switched phones even. Everyday the call would come in the same ringtone, and ring for exactly 60 seconds, before the person on the other end hung up.
If I answered, whoever it was on the other side would be completely silent. When the 60 seconds were up, there was a click on the other side, and the person was gone. It has been 364 days since the calls started. 341 since I started picking up the phone and talking about random things like the weather, rude people, and other things. If you can’t tell, Iv’e been keeping track.
I never talk about anything that could give the person on the other side personal information. Sure, I’m aware that they probably already knew a lot of my personal information. They did keep getting my phone number somehow. But still, I’m going to be as safe as possible(while still having a bit of fun).
It’s the weekend. So right now, I’m just laying on my bed, waiting for the call after a really late birthday party. It was for my 18 year old cousin. Apparently he doesn’t like sleep because the party was still going when I left.
I glanced at the clock again, two more minutes.
“Can’t they just call early? For once?” I asked the air, knowing that no one was there to respond.
“Maybe,” I rolled onto my stomach, “If I just, respond with my name this time instead of some restaurant, they will leave me alone. I just want some good sleep!”
If someone saw me right now, just talking to myself, they would probably think I was insane. Which, to be fair, I think I’m insane too.
I sighed and shoved my face into the pillow, screaming out my frustration.
Just then, the phone speakers blared to life, straining with how loud the stupid ringtone was playing. It was the same one that was on that show my little sister used to watch, Hunter Street, was it? I don’t know. It was actually a pretty good show though…
I rolled off the bed and onto my feet, grabbing the phone off of my dresser, “Welcome to Moe’s! Today our special is a Mexican sauce barrito with adobe chicken, and queso. The chips are even free today! It’s a one time deal, would you like to order?”
I stifled a laugh when I remembered that the chips at Moe’s were always free. Oh well, hopefully the person doesn’t realize that.
The silence dragged on for a second when I didn’t say anything else.
“You disgrace to this world,” a voice on the other side said.
I let out a surprised laugh that quickly turned into an amused one, “I know. I try, thank you for noticing!”
A quiet snort came through the line, “you are very different from most of the people that I know.”
I smiled again, I can’t believe they actually answered, “I think I’m still in light shock that you even spoke, but I am going to take that as a compliment.”
“Good.”
I laughed again. We were silent for another few seconds. I saw how much time we had left and frowned.
“You know… even though it’s sort of weird that you have called me everyday at the same time, In the morning no less, I think I’d like to talk to you more? Even just for the minute everyday…” I trailed off.
I heard a faint sound on the other side of the phone, almost like a sigh.
A second later I receive my answer, “sure.”
And then. The time was up. The phone clicked off, and I fell back onto my bed with a smile.
“‘It won’t be worth it,’ they said. ‘No one is ever going to pick up, they aren’t planning on it,’ They said,” I laugh again in disbelief, a feeling of shock still running through me, “Well prove them wrong, we did.”
And so I lay there, staring at the white ceiling of my room, thinking about what is to come, and not regretting a thing.
I sat up, and looked around my room, seeing the poem I had on my wall. It was written by a famous writer. I only had the first half, the poster had been made to look like it was ripped. It wasn’t. The last half I had memorized, so that half wasn’t needed on my wall.
I skimmed my eyes over the first part, and finished it out loud with a smile,
“And as the rain dried up and the sun finally rose, the last leaf fell, and the entire pond froze. Although that wasn’t bad for the children that day, and they all went outside, to the pond, to play.”
